NMC Student Art Exhibition
April 7 — April 30, 2023
The Annual Northwestern Michigan College Student Art Exhibition features work by NMC Fine Art and VisCom students in a variety of media and styles including painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and graphic design. The works in this year’s exhibition were selected by guest jurors Nik Burkhart (Fine Art) and Matt Esckelson (Graphic Design).
ABOUT THE JURORS
Nik Burkhart
Maple City, MI
Nik Burkhart is an interdisciplinary artist whose art practice encompasses painting, drawing and object making. His recent artwork is an exploration into how we symbolize and interpret the natural phenomena that we encounter in the environment around us. He maintains a studio art practice in the Maple City area and is the Gallery Manager at Tamarack Gallery in Omena, Michigan. Previously he worked in Chicago for the nationally recognized art handling company, U.S.Art, as both an art handler and project manager. He holds a B.A. in Studio Art from Hope College and has exhibited his artwork in Chicago, New York, and abroad, and recently created permanent murals for the Emmet County Fairgrounds and the Petoskey Public Library.
Matt Esckelson
Traverse City, MI
Matt Esckelson is a logo designer and illustrator living in Traverse City, MI, and a graduate of NMC’s Visual Communications program. He spent several years working as a freelance designer under the name Signet Design Co, and now splits his time between Greenlight Marketing in Traverse City and Avidity Creative in Des Moines, Iowa. He has won awards from the American Advertising Awards and the Art Director’s Association of Iowa, and placed first in the Logo Wave Awards #12 for his work for Oryana Community Co-op’s Green Grocery Initiative. Both his agency and his independent work have also been featured in the Logolounge. His current focuses are branding and food & beverage packaging.

The NMC High School Art Exhibition, juried by NMC Art and VisCom faculty, features artwork in a variety of media and styles by juniors and seniors from Northern Michigan’s regional high schools.
