NMC Student Art Exhibition

April 8, 2022 — May 1, 2022

The Annual Northwestern Michigan College Student Art Exhibition features work by NMC Fine Art and VisCom students in a variety of media and styles including painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and graphic design. The works in this year’s exhibition were selected by guest jurors Jean Larson (Fine Art) and Patrick Flynn (Graphic Design).

ABOUT THE JURORS

Painter Jean Larson grew up and started her career in Traverse City. In 1984 she moved to Boston to broaden her exposure to the art world and within five years her work gained enormous recognition both at home and abroad. Her paintings can now be found in a number of private collections and galleries across the United States, and she currently divides her time between Michigan, the south of France, and Iceland. While living in Iceland she began to use photography to develop her artwork, in particular using the medium to explore those places where the natural world and the built environment interconnect and collide.  Further travels in 2011 and 2012 took her to a remote part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo where this time the people, particularly the children, were the source of inspiration for her work. She has exhibited at the Dennos Museum in 2016 and 2021.

Graphic Designer and Art Director Patrick Flynn received his BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. After graduating he became the art director for Metropolis Magazine in the Twin Cities. From there he was hired by the New York Times to redesign and art director the Sport Monday section of the paper. After several years in New York he returned to the Midwest to become art director of the Progressive Magazine in Madison, Wisconsin. It was at the Progressive where he truly made his mark art directing a who’s who in cutting edge illustrators of the time including Brad Holland, Marshall Arisman, Francis Jetter, Sue Coe, Joe Ciardiello, Randall Enos, and Ralph Steadman. In 2008 he received the Richard Gangel Award in Graphic Design from the Society of Illustrators and continues to live and work in Madison.
