Louise Jones: 10,000 Flowers

In her brief time on earth, Louise Jones has already put in her ten thousand flowers.
10,000 Flowers showcases new works by Jones drawing inspiration from still life and landscape traditions such as Trompe-l'œil (the illusion of three dimensional space), Vanitas (themes of mortality), scientific botanical illustration, and cityscapes.
Best known for her floral murals, her new works on canvas mark a departure, delving further into our relationships with the natural world, seasons, and death.
Whether they are unorchestrated interior scenes, or snapshots of the often blurred lines where urban environments clash with unkempt nature, she still finds ways that flowers enter the frame, sometimes in an unexpected manner. The illusion of movement is created in a life-size depiction of a gently flowing quilt adorned with floral patterned fabrics in “Economy of Motion”.
Also on display is Jones’ 50 State Flowers project, in which the flowers representing each US state are painted in crisp detail on individual miniature wood panels, which was created for an upcoming exhibition at the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Louise Jones (neé Chen) is a second-generation Chinese American, born in Los Angeles in 1988. Her artistic practice centers around painting, while her background is in drawing and printmaking at UCSC. Her work first gained recognition after moving to Detroit in 2014, where she began painting murals of flowers on buildings and local businesses. To date, her murals have been displayed in museums and public spaces throughout the US and the world, including the Henry Ford Cancer Pavilion, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. She currently works in the public and private sectors simultaneously; completing floral mural commissions in addition to works on canvas inspired by the breadth of human impact and culture.
