The Dennos Museum Center
Modern Crazy Quilting & Extraordinary Embellishments - FULL

Crazy Quilt by Kathleen GlynnFebruary 11 & 12, 2012, 12:00 – 4:00 pm each day

In this class led by Kathleen Glynn, we will explore crazy quilting with a modern eye. Using a kaleidoscope of fancy fabrics and cottons, we will hand-piece a quilt block (or two or three) which will certainly become  heirlooms for future generations. Using embroidery techniques, beading, and lace application we will start to embellish the block. We will continue to layer techniques along the seamlines and create hand-stitched motifs and designs in each individual fabric piece using a variety of embroidery threads, yarn couching and button building. The finished block might be the beginning of a full-sized quilt or the center of a decorative pillow or wall hanging. No sewing machine is required, however, machine piecing will be demonstrated in class and sewing machines are welcome.

Although offered in tandem, students could also attend either class, depending on their focus of interest.

The Saturday class will focus on piecing and establishing the block, and attachment of lace, motifs (store-bought, vintage or thrift store finds) and preliminary embroidery.

The Sunday class will cover a range of embroidery techniques and stitching, building composite stitches, and experimentation with various fibers. Treatments for folding ribbons, layering simple trims, and appliqué will be demonstrated. No sewing machines necessary, as all work will be done by hand. We will stitch onto the blocks, or students may stitch a personal sampler on a solid fabric.

Suitable for all levels.
