Poetry of Landscape: The Seasons - Paintings by Russell Chatham

Exhibit Dates: January 20, 2008 to April 6, 2008

One of the simplest ways to describe Russell Chatham is to say that for him art is a way of life. He is fully at ease with his role as a translator of the world around him and his art reflects the sense of harmony, mystery, vitality, beauty, and a fascination with the effects of the changing light as well as the silent, spiritual aspects of landscape.

Russell Chatham creates luminescent visions that are subtle with seemingly inevitable gradations of light and shadow. As a painter and author, Chatham is self taught. His paintings and original lithographs have been seen in more than 400 one-man exhibitions held at museums and private galleries in America, Britain, France, and Japan. His works are found in more than 4,000 prominent private, corporate, and public collections worldwide. This exhibition presented at the Dennos Museum Center includes 23 paintings from the private collections of Randall and Mary Pittman and Forest Health Services.

Poetry of Landscape: The Seasons is made possible by Randall and Mary Pittman and Forest Health Services, and with support from Piper and Harry Goldson and Suttons Bay Galleries. The Dennos Museum Center receives additional programming support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. Media support provided by TV 7&4.
