The Dennos Museum Center
Inuit Cultural Tours

The Inuit Cultural Tour program is built around the Dennos Museum Center's collection of Inuit Art and Michigan State Social Studies and Art Curriculum standards. It combines art production, hands-on learning, games and aesthetics to engage students with the Inuit people. Through connecting and learning about Inuit culture, students internalize and apply the concept that art reflects culture.

In a typical Inuit Cultural Tour, students tour the Power Family Inuit Gallery with hands-on artifacts, play Inuit Games and complete a related art project (relief printmaking for older students, stencils or parka decorating for younger students). Other activities may include drumming, films and writing.

This program was initially developed for sixth grade classes, but is easily modified to be appropriate for other grade levels. Inuit Cultural Tours are very popular with pre-school and lower elementary students due to the hands-on nature of the program.

Inuit Cultural Tours cost $5 per student, teachers and aides are admitted free, one chaperone for every ten students is admitted free any additional adults pay the $6 adult admission charge.

Please contact Diana Bolander, Curator of Education, at dbolander@nmc.edu or (231) 995-1029 or use our online tour request form to make arrangements for your group's specific needs.  Scholarships through the Dennos Museum Center may be available for your Inuit Cultural Tour if your group is unable to pay.
