I met many Inuit Artists and saw so much Canadian wildlife including polar bears, walrus, whales and birds." The trips include a resource team made up of Inuit artists and scholars, botanists, biologists, photographers, geologists and more. Collage: Haiku as Inspiration with Judith Content
Time: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Cost: $80 for members/$90 for non-members, plus a $25 material fee to be paid to the instructor the day of the class
This workshop will begin with the opportunity to explore an array of surface design techniques effective for collage. We will work with walnut ink, wax and watercolors and acrylic paints in combination with surface resists creating rich, beautiful and original papers. These techniques would also be effective on cloth for future projects. The workshop will also include an introduction to the art of Japanese haiku. Within 17 (or fewer) syllables, haiku poets express a world of emotions: humor, joy, loss, anticipation, loneliness, and fulfillment. Haiku also have a beginning, middle, and an end which often comes with a twist, a surprise, a new image or idea. Because haiku often have several meanings and demand a measure of active participation on the part of the reader, this stimulates uniquely individual interpretations of haiku. As a unique canvas for collage, students will be working with small wooden sake boxes. When working with the box in three dimensions, the possibilities are endless in expressing the nuances of a haiku.
