Envisioning: The Power of Ritual Canadian Indian Woodland Art Traveling Exhibition

This exhibition represents the silkscreen prints of seven seminal contemporary Canadian Indian artists whose visions have forged a modernist style, strikingly original and totally free of traditional pictorial rendering.  It is an artistic sensibility that fuses ancient pictographs with 20th-century formalism, giving new life to an age-old tradition. Known as the Algonquin Legend Painters of Northern Ontario and Manitoba, they find inspiration in the oral tradition of the Algonquin-speaking people, Anishinabek. They are devoted to depicting and interpreting the myths and legends of their ancestral tribes.

Selected from more than 90 prints, paintings and drawings in the Dennos Museum Center's permanent collection of Canadian Indian Art, this exhibition is comprised of masterworks by Norval Morrisseau, Jackson Beardy, Daphne Odjig, Samuel Ash, Joshim and Goyce Kakegamic, and Carl Ray.  This generation of artists exudes a liveliness and intensity that captures the essence of Native Indian tribal life, past and present.
